SQL advocates cite flexibility, precision, and the ability to express any analytical question in a mature, well-understood language. No-code advocates point to accessibility, speed of exploration, and the ability to put analytical capability in the hands of business users without requiring them to become engineers. Both camps are right, in their respective contexts — which is exactly why the debate often produces more heat than light.

The practical question for data leaders is not "which is better?" but rather "which is better for which use case, which user persona, and which stage of the analytical workflow?" This guide provides a framework for answering those questions concretely, and for designing an analytics stack that deploys each approach where it delivers the most value.

Use Case Differentiation

SQL and no-code tools are not competing to answer the same questions. They are optimized for different parts of the analytical workflow and different types of questions.

SQL excels at precise, complex, and repeatable queries. Questions involving multi-table joins, complex window functions, subqueries, conditional aggregations, and custom metric calculations are expressed more reliably and readably in SQL than in any drag-and-drop interface. SQL transformation in dbt provides full expressiveness, version control, testing, documentation, and peer review for the metric definitions that underpin the entire analytics function. No-code exploration in the BI layer provides business user accessibility, self-service speed, and interactive visualization without requiring users to understand the underlying SQL.

The key design principle is that business logic should live in the SQL transformation layer, not the no-code BI layer. Metric calculations, cohort definitions, attribution logic, and segmentation rules should be implemented in dbt models where they are governed, tested, and documented.
