Cookie Policy

Effective Date: January 1, 2025

1. Introduction

This Cookie Policy explains how Getretrograd, Inc. ("Getretrograd," "we," "us," or "our") uses cookies, localStorage, sessionStorage, and similar browser storage technologies when you visit our website at getretrograd.com or use our analytics platform (collectively, the "Services"). This policy provides you with clear information about the technologies we use, why we use them, and your rights to manage them.

By continuing to use our Services after reviewing this policy, you acknowledge that you understand and accept our use of the technologies described here. You can withdraw or modify your consent at any time using the methods described in Section 7 of this policy.

2. What Are Cookies

Cookies are small text files that are placed on your device (computer, tablet, smartphone) when you visit a website. They are widely used by website operators to make websites function more efficiently and to provide reporting information to website owners. Cookies can be "session cookies" (which expire when you close your browser) or "persistent cookies" (which remain on your device for a set period or until you delete them).

In addition to traditional cookies, we use related browser storage technologies including:

  • localStorage: A browser-native storage mechanism that persists data across browser sessions until explicitly cleared. Unlike cookies, localStorage data is not transmitted to our servers with each request — it stays on your device and is read only by our client-side JavaScript code.
  • sessionStorage: Similar to localStorage but cleared automatically when you close the browser tab or window.
  • Pixel tags and web beacons: Tiny transparent images embedded in web pages or emails that allow us to track whether a page was visited or an email was opened.

Getretrograd uses cookies and localStorage as the primary storage mechanisms. We do not use sessionStorage for persistent data or tracking purposes.

3. Why We Use Cookies and localStorage

We use these technologies for several purposes:

  • To ensure the website and platform function correctly and securely
  • To remember your preferences and settings between visits
  • To analyze how visitors use our website so we can improve it
  • To measure the effectiveness of our marketing and content
  • To provide customer support chat functionality
  • To process payments securely

4. Types of Cookies We Use

4.1 Essential / Strictly Necessary Cookies

These cookies are necessary for the website and platform to function and cannot be disabled in our systems. They are typically only set in response to actions you take such as logging in, setting your privacy preferences, or filling in forms. They include:

  • Session management cookies: Keep you logged in to the Getretrograd platform during your session.
  • CSRF protection tokens: Prevent cross-site request forgery attacks by validating that form submissions originate from our website.
  • Load balancer cookies: Ensure your requests are consistently routed to the same server instance for session continuity.
  • Security cookies: Detect and prevent fraudulent activities and other security threats.

4.2 Analytics Cookies

These cookies allow us to count visits and traffic sources so we can measure and improve the performance of our website. They help us to know which pages are the most and least popular and see how visitors move around the site. All information these cookies collect is aggregated and therefore anonymous. If you do not allow these cookies, we will not know when you have visited our site and will not be able to monitor its performance.

4.3 Functional Cookies

These cookies enable the website to provide enhanced functionality and personalization. They may be set by us or by third-party providers whose services we have added to our pages. If you do not allow these cookies, some or all of these services may not function properly.

4.4 Marketing / Targeting Cookies

Getretrograd does not currently use third-party marketing or advertising cookies on our website. We do not share visitor data with advertising networks for targeted advertising purposes. If this practice changes, we will update this policy and seek your consent prior to implementation.

5. Specific Cookies and localStorage Keys We Use

The following table describes the specific cookies, localStorage keys, and similar storage items currently in use on our website and platform:

Name Type Provider Purpose Duration
cookieConsent localStorage Getretrograd Stores your cookie consent decision (accepted/declined) to avoid showing the banner on repeat visits. Persistent (until cleared)
[domain]_bar_closed localStorage Getretrograd Records whether you have dismissed the funding announcement bar on the homepage. Persistent (until cleared)
_ga Cookie Google Analytics Distinguishes unique users by assigning a randomly generated number as a client identifier. Included in each page request to calculate visitor, session, and campaign data. 2 years
_ga_[ID] Cookie Google Analytics 4 Persists session state for GA4 measurement. Used to track page views, events, and conversions associated with each visit. 2 years
intercom-id-[app_id] Cookie Intercom Customer support chat. Identifies the user for session continuity in support conversations. 9 months
intercom-session-[app_id] Cookie Intercom Maintains the active Intercom support session for 7-day rolling window continuity. 7 days
__stripe_sid Cookie Stripe Payment processing session. Set during the checkout and billing management flow to prevent fraud and ensure payment security. 30 minutes
__stripe_mid Cookie Stripe Fraud prevention and payment security. Used by Stripe to identify devices and prevent fraudulent payments. 1 year

6. localStorage and sessionStorage in Detail

We use the browser's localStorage API — not HTTP cookies — for storing certain user preferences and state on our website. This is a deliberate design choice: localStorage data never leaves your browser (it is never transmitted to our servers as part of an HTTP request), which reduces the privacy footprint of these preferences compared to traditional cookie-based approaches.

Specifically, we use localStorage for the following purposes on getretrograd.com:

  • cookieConsent: Stores your decision to accept or decline non-essential cookies. Value is "accepted" or "declined". Set when you interact with the cookie consent banner.
  • [domain]_bar_closed: Records that you have dismissed the announcement banner at the top of the homepage. Value is "1". Set when you click the dismiss button on the announcement bar.

These localStorage items can be cleared at any time by clearing your browser's local storage (see Section 7 for instructions). Clearing them will cause the cookie consent banner and announcement bar to reappear on your next visit.

We do not use sessionStorage for any tracking or analytics purpose. It may be used transiently by the analytics platform interface (not the marketing website) for UI state that does not need to persist across browser sessions, such as the current tab selection within a dashboard view.

7. Third-Party Cookies

We use services from third parties that may set their own cookies. These third parties operate independently and have their own privacy and cookie policies. We are not responsible for the content of those policies.

Google Analytics (analytics.google.com): We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors interact with our website. Google Analytics uses cookies to distinguish users and sessions, track page views and events, and generate aggregate traffic reports. Google may process data in the United States. You can opt out of Google Analytics across all websites by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on available at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Intercom (intercom.io): We use Intercom as our customer support chat platform. Intercom sets cookies to identify users in support conversations and to deliver our support widget on relevant pages. For logged-in platform users, Intercom may also access account data we provide to personalize support interactions. See Intercom's privacy policy at www.intercom.com/legal/privacy for details.

Stripe (stripe.com): We use Stripe for payment processing. Stripe sets cookies during the checkout and billing management flow for fraud prevention and payment security purposes. Stripe processes payment data under its own privacy policy available at stripe.com/privacy.

8. Managing Your Cookie Preferences

You have several options for managing how cookies and browser storage are used when you visit our website:

Using our cookie consent banner: When you first visit getretrograd.com, you will see a cookie consent banner. You can click "Accept" to allow analytics and functional cookies, or "Decline" to restrict to essential cookies only. Your choice is saved in localStorage and honored on subsequent visits. To change your preference, clear your browser's localStorage (instructions below) and reload the page.

Clearing localStorage: To clear localStorage data stored by our website, you can use your browser's developer tools:

  • Google Chrome: Open DevTools (F12) → Application tab → Storage → Local Storage → right-click getretrograd.com → Clear
  • Mozilla Firefox: Open DevTools (F12) → Storage tab → Local Storage → right-click getretrograd.com → Delete All
  • Safari: Develop menu → Web Inspector → Storage → Local Storage → select getretrograd.com entries → Delete
  • Microsoft Edge: Open DevTools (F12) → Application tab → Storage → Local Storage → right-click getretrograd.com → Clear

Browser cookie settings: You can configure your browser to block all cookies, accept cookies from specific sites, or delete cookies when you close the browser. Note that blocking essential cookies will impair platform login functionality. For browser-specific instructions, consult your browser's help documentation:

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data
  • Firefox: Options → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
  • Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Cookies and website data
  • Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Cookies and site data

Google Analytics opt-out: You can prevent Google Analytics from tracking your usage across all websites by installing the official opt-out browser extension from Google at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

9. Do Not Track Signals

Some browsers transmit "Do Not Track" (DNT) signals to websites as you browse. Because there is no consistent industry standard for implementing DNT signals, we do not currently alter our cookie usage in response to DNT signals. We are monitoring developments in the DNT standard and will update this policy if our practices change.

If you want to limit the collection of your browsing data, the most effective approach is to manage cookies directly through your browser settings or the opt-out mechanisms described in Section 8.

10. Cookies in Our Analytics Platform

Separate from the marketing website, the Getretrograd analytics platform (app.getretrograd.com) uses additional cookies and localStorage for platform functionality including:

  • Authentication tokens (session cookies, cleared on logout)
  • Dashboard layout and filter preferences (localStorage)
  • Report viewer state (localStorage)
  • Feature flag configurations (localStorage)

These are essential for the platform to function and cannot be disabled without impairing your ability to use the service. They are covered in more detail in the Data Processing Addendum (DPA) provided to enterprise customers as part of their service agreement.

11. Data Retention

Session cookies are deleted automatically when you close your browser. Persistent cookies remain until they expire or until you delete them. localStorage data remains until you clear it using your browser tools or until our JavaScript code explicitly removes it (which happens, for example, when we no longer need a particular preference key due to a product change).

Analytics data collected through Google Analytics is retained for 26 months by default before automated deletion, consistent with Google's standard data retention policies. We do not retain individual-level analytics data on our own servers — we rely on the aggregate reporting provided by Google Analytics.

12. Changes to This Cookie Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in technology, regulation, our business operations, or for other reasons. We will notify you of significant changes by posting a notice on our website homepage or, if you are a platform subscriber, by email to your registered address. The effective date at the top of this policy indicates when it was last revised.

We encourage you to review this policy periodically to stay informed about our use of cookies and related technologies. Your continued use of our Services after changes to this policy constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
